What this section tests
The official CMAT structure assigns 25 objective questions to Quantitative Ability. The curriculum wording is broad, so preparation should cover common management-entrance foundations while keeping official documents as the authority.
Build the foundations first
Arithmetic
Work with fractions, decimals, percentages, ratios, proportions, averages and basic profit-loss relationships. Accuracy with simple numbers matters more than collecting shortcuts.
Algebra and equations
Practise translating sentences into expressions, solving linear equations and checking whether an answer satisfies the original condition.
Data use
Read tables and simple charts, compare values and calculate changes. Always identify the unit before calculating.
Geometry and measurement
Review standard perimeter, area, angle and basic mensuration ideas. Draw a labelled figure when the wording is dense.
A worked original example
A course fee rises from Rs 8,000 to Rs 9,200. The increase is Rs 1,200. Divide the increase by the original Rs 8,000: 1,200 ÷ 8,000 = 0.15. Therefore, the percentage increase is 15%.

A four-step solving routine
- Mark what is given and what must be found.
- Choose a direct method before reaching for a shortcut.
- Estimate the likely size of the answer.
- Recheck units, sign and arithmetic before selecting an option.
Diagnose mistakes, not just scores
Label an error as concept, translation, calculation, option-reading or time-pressure. Redo it without the answer key, then solve a similar original question. This converts a wrong answer into a study decision.
